Tighter rules on herbs coming?

A recent article from the NY Times on possible new legislation concerning "dietary supplements" which include herbal formulas.

I can't say the prospect of new rules and regulations makes me happy, but they may be necessary to strengthen the public's trust in prepared herbal products. Companies that make quality TCM products have a good reputation among practitioners, but there is no way for the public to know enough about these companies and the self-policing they do. I would hope that if new rules are passed, companies who have based their business on getting by with a shoddy product would not be able to make it, while those who already include quality control in their business model would be able to adapt. On the other hand, burdensome regulations could make it difficult for small companies to survive, reducing diversity in the market.
